My hometown of Bayou La Batre is a tight-knit community bound together by a love of the ocean, cooking, and congregating around a table. I began working summer jobs at age 10, including patting out crabcakes and packing freezer trucks for my mom’s business. By age 14, I was on a crab boat catching blue crabs and pogey fishing, the bait of choice for commercial crab fishermen. I have a deep appreciation for the people who work in the seafood industry after seeing first hand the blood, sweat and tears that go into catching blue crabs.
Eventually, I began selling my mother’s specialty items to friends and residents in the Birmingham area. Before I knew it, the demand was overwhelming. In 2017, I incorporated Bayou Gourmet to meet that demand. We are proud to say that we have now brought my mother and late grandmother’s decade old recipes to countless seafood lovers throughout the region.
We are proud to use only domestic, wild-caught seafood from what we call our backyard, the nutrient-rich waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and work alongside fishermen and processors who are family and friends.
